On January 6th, 2011, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal made an emergency ruling to ban the substances found in several types of bath salts. However, these substances aren’t bath salts at all.

“It’s called bath salts on the product, but I haven’t seen anybody use it for the purpose of taking a bath,” said Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Chief of Operations Perry Rushing.

The bath salts were being used to get high, but Rushing said that the lingering effects of the drugs led to three deaths and over 160 calls to Poison Control in Louisiana. Rushing said that these severe effects are what prompted Jindal to make the emergency ruling.

Kathryn Saichuk, LSU Health Promotion Coordinator, said that the fake bath salts are similar to other drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy. But Rushing said that he considers them more dangerous because of their suicidal effects.

Rushing said that the emergency ban was only the first step in the process of keeping the fake bath salts off of store shelves. He warned that the only permanent solution can come from a legislative act that must occur within 90 days of the emergency ruling.
